EAST BRISTOL ENTERPRISE LTD - HISTORY
The purpose of the East Bristol Enterprise is to assist the progress of East Central Bristol through economic growth - specifically through small business development and fuller employment. The original concept was to help those who
wished to go into business, mainly seen as self employment, both by providing advice on starting up and by providing cheap, easy in easy out workspace.
Initially
this happened at the Old Co-op Business Centre. It had been leased by a
dedicated neighbourhood charity, which had been established by youth and community
workers,
the Youth
Workshops Trust. The premises had housed a Youth Opportunity
Programme, followed by a Community Programme. These government schemes
enabled the building to offer new chances of employment to local young people. In
order to allow a 'great leap forward', the Trust helped create the Enterprise
Agency, EBE, which then purchased the building with assistance from both Bristol
City Council, Central Government and a loan from Avon County Council.
By 1992, EBE had raised funds to develop a disused site at Felix Road, and became the owner of the Easton Business Centre on land leased from Bristol City Council. Forty-seven units were available in Easton an area built on the mining
industry. One of the unique features of EBE and the centre was that it offered managed units, with services. It continues to offer, both to its licensees and other local residents, a professional business advisory service.
East Bristol Enterprise Ltd is a member of Bristol Means Business, a consortium of Agencies working together to promote sustainable businesses in the inner city. |
